Kuala Lumpur, August 23, 2024 - On August 20, 2024, Ms. Wilma Gaspili, also known as Ate Wamz, delivered a talk entitled “Reviving Patterns & Identity: A Talk on Traditional Filipino Tattoo Art” at the Sentro Rizal Kuala Lumpur. The event was organized as part of the year-long celebration of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Philippines and Malaysia and in commemoration of History Month. It was attended by Ambassador Maria Angela Ponce, Philippine Embassy personnel, their families, and members of the Filipino community.

During the event, Ate Wamz generously shared her story and expertise in traditional tattooing. She also discussed the different kinds of patterns, symbols, and meanings of different tattoo designs, and the history of traditional tattooing in the Philippines.

In her opening remarks, Ambassador Ponce underscored that traditional tattoos are not just an art form, but a vital part of Filipino culture and identity. Ambassador Ponce encouraged the audience to continue embracing and take pride in our traditions and culture, especially during this time of celebration of Buwan ng Wika. She also shared that Sarawak, specifically their Iban and Kayan tribes, also has a rich tradition in tattooing, as tattoos symbolize strength, spiritual connection, and protection against bad spirits.

Ate Wamz, a “mambabatok” or indigenous tattoo artist from the Benguet Kankana-ey and Ifugao Kalanguya tribes, has been a cultural advocate since 2018. She uses a traditional hand-tapping method, known as batok, to create intricate tattoos that carry deep cultural meanings. Inspired by elders like Apo Whang-Od, Ate Wamz's work emphasizes the rich history and significance of tattooing in the Philippines.

Her work not only celebrates the rich history of Filipino tattooing in Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao, but also highlights the profound cultural narratives embedded in the tattoo patterns. Each tattoo symbolizes aspects of the Filipino identity, such as bravery and ties to the community. Ate Wamz has traveled globally to educate others about this important cultural heritage, ensuring its preservation and appreciation worldwide.

Through her efforts, she continues to advocate for the recognition and celebration of traditional Filipino tattooing, showcasing its beauty and significance to the world. END
