PRESS RELEASES

25 June 2013—The Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that it conducted an entrepreneurship seminar through its Office of the Labor Attache last June 23 at the Filipino Workers Resource Center (FWRC).

Some 58 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) attended the seminar, which was designed for OFWs who are inclined to engage in small business. Philippine Overseas Labor Office Administrative Assistant and International Labor Organization (ILO) Master Trainor, Roberto S. Rodelas, conducted the half-day training activity.

In her opening remarks, Labor Attaché Dr. Alicia Santos stated that the seminar is aimed at enhancing our kababayan's business skills and not just knowing what products or services they can invest on. It is prudent for our OFWs to have long-range plans to ensure a successful reintegration by going into business.

"We will continue to conduct these entrepreneurship and other training seminars as much as we can to equip our fellow OFWs with useful skills and knowledge, which they can use when they decide to return to the Philippines and perhaps join the mainstream of Filipino entrepreneurs," she said.

After the seminar, certificates of participation were awarded to the participants by Labor Attache Santos, assisted by Welfare Officer Gloria F. Tagle and Mr. Rodelas.

"The FWRC in Kuala Lumpur is highly noted among similar centers in other countries, as it is not only as a shelter for Filipino workers, but is also a skills and livelihood training center.

We would like to enhance the skills of Filipino workers and transform them into skilled workers or entrepreneurs, now or later," Ambassador J. Eduardo Malaya said.

The center offers skills training programs year-round, and is currently offering 22 courses, notably computer programming, basic nursing, cosmetology, culinary and baking, Bahasa Melayu, and dressmaking. It is managed by the FWRC Council of Leaders, composed of volunteer OFWs and Filipino community leaders.

Counselling sessions for OFWs are also regularly conducted.

The Embassy's FWRC is housed in a six-room building, with a floor area of 370 square meters situated in a gated 650 square meters property. There are also three modular classrooms for different training courses constructed outside the main building. END
