31 July 2019 – Young Filipino students displayed prowess in science and math as they swept 82 out of 155 awards at the Vanda International Science Competition and International Junior Math Olympiad held from 26 to 30 July 2019 at the WISMA Huazong, Kuala Lumpur.

Philippine Deputy Chief of Mission and Consul General Raly L. Tejada, who represented the Embassy as guest of honor, presented awards and witnessed the triumph of the Filipino children who competed against 1,400 other youth from 20 other countries.

The Filipino students secured 17 gold, 14 silver, 19 bronze medals, and 17 honorable mentions, clinching the over-all rank of first place in the individual round of the Vanda International Science Competition. They also hauled nine gold, nine silver and 19 bronze medals in the group category of the same competition.

Meanwhile, at the International Junior Math Olympiad, the Filipino youth placed third over-all with 15 gold, 15 silver, 12 bronze medals, and 5 honorable mentions.

Four of the eight gold medalists in both competitions were Filipinos and received the event’s most esteemed award called the President’s Award for Excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (PAExS). Claire Mitzi Acosta, Kristner Sheyn Saludo, Jerome Austin Te and Shawn Darren Chua received each PAExS gold medals, US$100 prize, and a five-day, all-expense paid trip to attend a leadership camp in Singapore to be held sometime in December 2019.
