Kuala Lumpur, 8 October 2021– On October 2, the Philippines hosted a Virtual Cooking Demonstration for the ASEAN Ladies’ Circle (ALC) in Kuala Lumpur featuring two Philippine native rice delicacies: puto bumbong (Filipino purple rice cake steamed in bamboo tubes) and suman sa lihiya (Filipino rice cake cooked with lye water and served with caramel coconut sauce).
Filipino native delicacies or desserts are known as “kakanin”. Kakanin is derived from the words “kanin”, which means “cooked rice” and “kain”, which means “to eat”.
Kakanin are made fundamentally from rice and coconut and their by-products mixed with other local ingredients. With traditional cooking skills and techniques, these simple ingredients are transformed into a variety of delicious and colorful desserts or snacks which are well-loved by Filipinos.
Madam Ma. Victoria “Vicky” Jose, Patron of ALC Philippines and spouse of Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia Charles Jose, conducted the LIVE virtual cooking demonstration, while 42 participants (out of the 80+ members who attended) from various ALC member-countries successfully cooked along with her.
ALC Philippines also gave away framed watercolor paintings created by Madam Vicky Jose as special prizes to the first 5 ladies (other than from ALC Philippines) who were able to submit photos of themselves with their plated suman sa lihiya or puto bumbong or both.
The virtual cooking demonstration was attended by ALC President and Patron of ALC Indonesia Madam Kiki Hermono and around 80 ALC members in Kuala Lumpur, including the following Patrons, Alternate Patrons and Country Representatives:
