Kuala Lumpur, 9 June 2023 – The Philippine Embassy in Malaysia hosted a diplomatic reception on 7 June 2023 at the JW Marriott Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, to mark the 125th anniversary of Philippine Independence and Nationhood.

Aside from celebrating a milestone anniversary of Philippine Independence, this year’s reception was highly-anticipated as it is the first one held after three years, since the pandemic broke out in March 2020.

The celebration was graced by the Guest of Honor, The Honorable Fadhlina binti Sidek, Minister of Education Malaysia.

Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia, Charles C. Jose, in his National Day Message, highlighted that this year also marks the 59th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Malaysia.

“As next-door neighbors, the interactions between our peoples go way back in centuries and the bond we share is as strong as it is deep. This bond has carried us through many defining moments in the history of our relationship. We count on this shared history between our nations and peoples to enable us to find mutually acceptable solutions as we forge ahead to address common challenges.”, the Ambassador stated.

He also addressed the Filipino members of the audience and greeted them a happy Independence Day. “Sa mga minamahal kong kababayan dito sa Malaysia, binabati ko kayong lahat ng isang maligayang pagdiriwang ng ating Araw ng Kasarinlan. Ipanalangin natin sa Poong Maykapal na nawa’y pagpalain Niya ang ating bansa ng kapayapaan, pagkaka-isa, kasaganahan at kaunlaran”, Ambassador Jose said.

Around 380 guests from the diplomatic corps, Malaysian government, private sector, and select members of the Filipino community attended the event and partook of the sumptuous Filipino dishes and desserts served. The audience were also treated to a musical performance by Kuala Lumpur-based Filipino artists, the BTru Band.

With the support of the Philippine Tourism Promotions Board, the guests relished and took photos in the tourism display located in the foyer of JW Marriott’s grand ballroom, which featured three Philippine travel destinations – the historic walled city of Intramuros in Manila, the iconic White Beach of Boracay, and the spectacular diving destination of Cebu.
