Philippine Embassy Resumes Special Consular Missions for Undocumented Filipinos in Sabah Palm Oil Plantations
Kuala Lumpur, 17 June 2022 - The Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, resumed the conduct of Special Consular Missions to palm oil plantations in Tawau, Sabah on 05 to 09 June 2022 at the KL Kepong Clubhouse.
The said special mission was held in response to the need of undocumented Filipino workers and their dependents for documentation to regularize their employment status in palm oil plantations in Sabah.
The Embassy team processed almost 1,500 applications for passport and Report of Birth. In cooperation with the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the team also assisted in the issuance of Certificates of Live Birth (COLB) to Filipinos born in the Philippines.
The Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) and the Office of the Social Welfare Attaché joined the Special Consular Mission to Tawau. POLO conducted exploratory talks with the management and workers of palm oil plantations for the verification of employment contracts and promoted POLO-OWWA program to Filipino workers.
The Office of the Social Welfare Attaché distributed food packages to Filipino workers and their families and visited the Humana School for children of palm oil plantation workers.
Another series of special consular missions are now being worked out to accommodate more Filipino workers and their dependents.
