ASIA-EUROPE FOUNDATION, IFRC AND JAPAN SIGN AGREEMENT ON STOCKPILING OF EMERGENCY SUPPLIES FOR PHILIPPINES AND FOUR OTHER COUNTRIES
On 28 November 2023, Philippine Ambassador-Designate to Malaysia Maria Angela A. Ponce attended the signing ceremony and launch of the Stockpile Project by the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) in partnership with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), funded by the Government of Japan.
The beneficiary countries for the project are the Philippines, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia and Pakistan -- chosen because of their high risk of exposure to disasters caused by natural hazards, while also playing a leading role in emergency response and improving access to health services.
Under this initiative, the IFRC will procure essential items necessary for public health emergencies and assist the beneficiary countries in the rapid deployment of critical medical resources to affected areas.
For the Philippines, items to be procured include, but are not limited to, equipment and supplies to continue to support COVID-19 testing, isolation, facility-based treatment and rehabilitation, and support to PHL Red Cross’ (PRC) vaccination efforts, and supporting equipment like vaccine refrigerator, generator, batteries and inverters, pallets, insulators etc for the safekeeping of procured equipment, medicines and supplies.
The Stockpile Project initiative is funded by the Government of Japan, which has contributed USD 10 million for the project.
The signing ceremony was attended by the National Chairperson of the Malaysian Red Crescent Society, HRH Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz; Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia HE Takahashi Katsuhiko; ASEF Executive Director Ambassador Morikawa Toru; the IFRC Regional Director Alexander Matheou; and representatives from the embassies and high commissions of the beneficiary countries.
