The children’s book, published in 2023, tells the story of how the beloved Filipino snack, lumpiang shanghai, might have been created. It also demonstrates good values that are innate in Filipinos such as charity, respect and care for the elderly, as well as helping others for the good of all.
Ambassador-Designate Maria Angela Ponce welcomed the participants in her opening remarks and thanked Ms. Daza-Puyat for taking the time to share her heartwarming story. “Alamat ng Lumpiang Shanghai is not just a story about a dish, but a narrative that encompasses the soul of Filipino culture. It brings to life the communal and familial spirit of our dining traditions as Filipinos, where every meal is a celebration, and every dish tells a story”, Ambassador Ponce said.
Ms. Daza-Puyat conveyed her deep gratitude for the opportunity to share her book with Filipinos in Malaysia, highlighting the significance of the collaborative effort involved in preparing and serving a single dish. “Alamat ng Lumpiang Shanghai” won Best Children’s Short Story at the 2023 Catholic Mass Media Awards and is now part of the collection of the New York Public Library and the San Francisco Public Library through the efforts of the Philippine Consulates of New York and San Francisco, respectively.
