12 August 2024 - The Philippine Embassy joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ celebration of the Association of Southeast Asian’s (ASEAN) 57th anniversary, with the theme “Connected & Resilient Community.” The commemorative event was held at AirAsia RedQuarters (REDQ) on 08 August 2024.
The celebration was led by Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Mohamad bin Alamin and joined by representatives of the Diplomatic Missions of ASEAN Member States, ASEAN External Partners, the ASEAN Ladies Circle (ALC), International Organizations, the private sector, and the media.
Malaysia is incoming Chair of ASEAN for 2025. In his speech, Deputy Foreign Minister YB Datuk Mohamad bin Haji Alamin highlighted the crucial role of tourism in ASEAN, noting that it provides a stable and vital foundation for a diverse, strong, and resilient community. He underscored that now is the perfect time to demonstrate a shared vision of a borderless ASEAN, which will enhance regional connectivity and promote greater unity. He also stressed that enhancing the ASEAN community is essential for boosting connectivity and resilience across the region.
The program featured cultural performances from Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia as well as booths showcasing items and crafts of ASEAN member countries. Members of the Filipino community showcased the Pag-Apir dance, a traditional royal dance from the Maranao tribe of Lanao del Sur, which highlights the elegance of the fan (apir) and the dancers' graceful movements.
Ambassador Maria Angela Ponce expressed the Embassy’s full support for Malaysia as it prepares to assume the Chairship of ASEAN in 2025. Consul General Roussel Reyes, Third Secretary Vanessa Orbigo, Cultural Officer Jesher Micha Carolino, and Attaché Aina Abrencillo completed the Embassy’s strong representation at the event.
ASEAN was founded on 8 August 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. They were subsequently joined by Brunei Darussalam, Viet Nam, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Cambodia. END
