16 December 2024 – Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia, H.E. Maria Angela Ponce, delivered a public lecture on 12 December 2024 at Albukhary International University (AIU) on the topic of "The Philippines as an Archipelagic State: Protecting the Oceans and Marine Environment." The event, which was attended by students, faculty, and guests, also marked the inauguration of a special exhibit dedicated to “Archipelagic States: Identity, Consciousness, and Law.”
AIU Vice Chancellor and President Professor Dato’ Ir. Dr. Mohd Saleh Bin Jaafar highlighted the deep interconnectedness of humanity and the environment in his opening remarks, reflecting on the concept of Ummah—the shared sense of belonging and responsibility that unites us all as stewards of the planet.
In her lecture, Ambassador Ponce underscored that the protection and sustainability of the oceans are not just local concerns but a global priority. The Ambassador shared insights into how the Philippines’ archipelagic identity shapes its ocean governance strategies and climate action efforts.
The Philippines' ongoing efforts to protect its oceans and marine ecosystems are aligned with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) particularly SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), as well as international frameworks addressing climate change, environmental protection, and biodiversity.
The lecture provided a platform for in-depth discussions with AIU students from various countries, on the need for international cooperation in safeguarding the oceans and marine life for future generations.
The month-long exhibit on “Archipelagic States: Identity, Consciousness, and Law” will be on display at the University’s main lobby until the end of January 2025. END
