EMBASSY COMMEMORATES THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF DR. JOSE P. RIZAL
30 December 2024 – In commemoration of the 128th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Dr. Jose P. Rizal, the Philippine Embassy, led by Ambassador Maria Angela A. Ponce, held a flag retreat and wreath-laying ceremony at the Sentro Rizal, Philippine Embassy Kuala Lumpur on 27 December 2024. The event honored Dr. Rizal's life, legacy, and lasting contributions as our national hero who inspired generations through his sacrifices for the freedom and unity of the Philippines.
In her message, Ambassador Ponce emphasized the significance of this year’s theme, “Rizal sa Bagong Pilipinas: Buhay at Aral, Aming Nilalandas” (“Rizal in the New Philippines: Life and Teachings, Our Guide”) and highlighted Dr. Rizal’s dedication to freedom, equality, and education as key principles for building a brighter future for the nation. She encouraged Filipinos to reflect on Dr. Rizal’s values and their relevance to the country’s unity, reminding everyone of their duty to fellow Filipinos, the importance of preserving the nation’s heritage, and the need to strive for continued progress. Ambassador Ponce underscored Dr. Rizal’s role as a beacon of patriotism and a guiding light for Filipinos across generations, urging all to keep his memory alive not only in their hearts but also through their actions, as they build a better tomorrow guided by his ideals.
After the wreath-laying ceremony, a short film titled Dambana ni Rizal sa Fort Santiago that featured the life and legacy of our National Hero was shown. This was followed by a poetry reading of Mi Último Adiós, in which Filipino and Malaysian students, along with Embassy personnel, recited the poem in Spanish, Filipino, Bahasa Malay, and English. Written by Dr. Rizal in Fort Santiago on the eve of his execution, the poem reflects his profound patriotism and hope for its liberation.
The commemoration concluded with a simple salo-salo to celebrate the occasion. Through this event, Dr. Rizal’s works continue to resonate within the Filipino diaspora in Malaysia, ensuring their relevance not only for the present but also for future generations. END
