Malaysia to Witness First Philippine IndependenceDay Community Parade

08 June 2012 – The streets around the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur will witness the rich Philippine culture and tradition as the Filipino-Malaysian community and the Embassy come together for an Independence Day Parade at 10 a.m. on June 10, Sunday.

The parade is part of the "Fiesta sa Embahada 2012" (Open House at the Embassy), the highlight of the Embassy and the Filipino community's commemoration of the 114th Anniversary of the Declaration of Philippine Independence.

A 800-strong delegation, composed of Ambassador J. Eduardo Malaya, Embassy officers and staff, and leaders and members of the newly-organized Federation of Filipino Associations in Malaysia (FFAM) will parade in the streets of Kuala Lumpur in six floats.

"This is the first time that the Filipino-Malaysian community will showcase Philippine culture and talents in the streets of Kuala Lumpur in a parade. It is high time for the Philippines to showcase its culture to the Malaysian public, particularly as we encourage more Malaysian to visit our country, under our 'It's more fun in the Philippines' campaign," Ambassador Malaya said.

Adding color to the parade is the participation of Filipino-Malaysian model, television personality and "Truly Asia" host Cay Kuijipers, Malaysian Navy Band and the Philippine Off-Road Land Rover Team.

The parade will start at the Embassy grounds at Jalan (Street) Changkat Kia Peng, and will turn left to Jalan Kia Peng. It will then turn right to Jalan Perak across the Pavillion Shopping Complex, and right again to Jalan Pinang and Jalan Kia Peng to return to the Embassy grounds.

After the parade, a cultural program will be held at the Embassy grounds, with Filipino artists from the Philippines and those based in Malaysia showcasing Philippine talent at its best. The Ramos-Nebrija Guitar Duo, who is featured in the Kolej Tuanku Ja'afar International Youth Festival 2012, and vocalist of popular Filipino band Rivermaya, Jayson Francisco, are expected to perform during the program.

The preparations for the Independence Day community parade and program are spearheaded by Labor Attaché Dr. Alicia Santos with the FFAM, headed by Filipino Workers Resource Center (FWRC) Council of Leaders President Amializa Francisco.
