AMBASSADOR PONCE ADMINISTERS OATH TAKING OF NEW COMMUNITY OF FILIPINOS IN PENANG (COFP) OFFICERS, GRACES COFP BASKETBALL LEAGUE
Penang, 10 April 2025 — Ambassador Maria Angela A. Ponce administered the oath-taking of the new officers of the Community of Filipinos in Penang (COFP) led by President Daryl Caray on 06 April 2025 at the Island Glades Basketball Court in Penang. The ceremony was followed by the opening of the 1st COFP Basketball League, which brought seven teams from diverse communities across Penang to celebrate camaraderie, unity, and sportsmanship.
In her opening remarks, Ambassador Ponce underscored the significance of basketball as a unifying force among Filipinos around the world. She congratulated the COFP for launching the league, recognizing its efforts to strengthen community ties and promote Filipino values through sports.
COFP President Daryl Caray expressed his appreciation for the Embassy’s steadfast support, particularly in empowering Filipino organizations and fostering a sense of unity within the Filipino communities in Malaysia.
The league will run from April to May 2025. The seven teams participating are EN-Park, Ilocaknows, Gemstones, Dreamers, Baleleng, Teleperformance, and IGOP. These teams represent a cross-sector of Filipinos in Penang, including in engineering, call centers, factories, and the aerospace R&D industry.
The opening ceremony also featured a ‘Best Muse’ competition, with Chelsea Andrea Garcia of Team EN-Park emerging as the winner. Team Gemstones was awarded ‘Best in Uniform’.
Mr. Teh Chun Kai, representative of the Majlis Pengurusan Komuniti Kampung (MPKK) Island Glades and Komuniti Madani Greenlane Chairman YB Connie Tan, also graced the event.
Consul General Roussel Reyes performed the ceremonial toss to officially kick off the first game. -END
